It’s half past seven. Grandad’s asleep in Perth. In her bedroom, he’s reading Goldilocks.

He read two stories for her back in March. Goldilocks wasn’t one of them.

He reads two. Lullaby reads the rest, in his voice.

Perth, Jakarta, or a Premier Inn in Swindon.

One afternoon in March

Grandad reads two bedtime stories into his phone. Nothing to download.

That night

They’re in her library. Every word is him, including the four goes it took him to get through “Pachycephalosaurus”.

Every night after

She picks and he reads. Including the books he’s never opened.

What’s actually happening

The stories he reads himself are kept exactly as he read them. Everything after that is a synthetic voice built from those recordings — his voice reading on, not a recording of him.

He decides. He gives permission before anything is made, he can hear anything made in his name, and he can stop it whenever he likes. If he does, or if we do, the stories he read stay yours.
